Itinerary
The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is rated among the best trekking trips in the world because of the exquisite beauty of its natural surroundings. These include different ecological areas, from high deserts to Andean tropical rain-forest. Following this ancient Inca Trail, we will be walking past mysterious archeological sites, half-covered by the jungle overgrowth that makes it look as if you were discovering them for the first time, to finally arrive at the lost city of the Incas: Machu Picchu. Our journey will be conducted by experienced guides that will make your trip most pleasant and safe. Our luggage will be carried by native "quechua" carriers and we will enjoy delicious meals prepared by experts in international cuisine.
Day 01: Cusco - Km. 82 – Huayllabamba.
Transfer from the hotel to km. 82, where we will meet our porters and equipment. We will start our trek escorted by the porters, going through semi-arid terrain along the Urubamba River with magnificent views of snow-capped mountains, until we arrive to Llactapata. Here we will leave Urubamba valley and set off up the Kusichaca river to our first campsite located in Huayllabamba (3000 m.a.s.l.– 9842 ft.a.s.l. approximately).
KM 82 – Llactapata: 5 KM / 3 hours aprox.
Km 82 to Huayllabamba: 11 km / 6 hours aprox.
Day 02: Huayllabamba – Pacaymayo.
After a healthy breakfast, we will begin to walk to the Warmihuañusca pass (4200 m-13860 ft approximately). In a short time we will be on the top of the pass, from where it is possible to see the other side of the path leading to the Runkurakay ruins. At the end of a gorge, we will stop at a place called Pacaymayo (3600 m.a.s.l. – 11181 ft.a.s.l.), our second camp. (Full meals).
Huayllabamba-Pacaymayo: 7km / 7 hours approx.
Day 03: Pacaymayo – Wiñaywayna.
From Pacaymayo A while later zigzag but short ascent will take us to the Runkurakay circular ruins. There is no sign of human life, only great woods and abrupt hills.
After a good rest, we will start ourway down and then we can clearly notice that the Inka Trail is well preserved from this point. In a short while we will get the steps which go up to Sayacmarca ruins (3620 mts – 11946 ft approximately).
From Sayacmarca the stone road begins to go into the jungle, continuing our trek towards Phuyupatamarca ruins. The trail crosses the "Lago Seco" and for brief moments we will go up and down. We will then cross "The Tunnel", a natural cavity produced by a landslide but adapted by the Inkas. The Inka Trail well-traced borders continuous on the hills full of moss and fern. After crossing a small pass, we will see some steep steps and under these the Ceremonial Center of Phuyupatamarca ruins. (3650 mts – 12045 ft approximately). Going down the trail we can see the Urubamba valley and the river of the same name. The path goes down to Wiñay Wayna ruins(2650 mts. – 8745 ft approximately), the most important ruins after Machu Picchu and our last campsite. (B, L, D).
Pacaymayo – Phuyupatamarca: 7 km / 6 hours aprox.
Phuyupatamarca – Wiñaywayna: 4 Km / 3 hours aprox.
Day 04: Wiñaywayna - Macchu Picchu – Cusco.
We will leave our camp very early in the morning, heading towards the Inti Punku, Gate of the Sun (2740 mts-9042 ft approximately), the last pass. From this site, Machu Picchu (2450 mts -8085 ft approximately) looks unreal and beautiful. We have the rest of the day to visit the entire citadel. The train goes back to Cusco from the Aguas Calientes station. Arrival and transfer to the hotel. Breakfast and lunch Included (B and L). (5 hours hiking).
Note: The last camp could be Phuyupatamarca.
