Itinerary description

DAY 01: CUSCO – ÑAUPA IGLESIA – SOCCMA – PEROLNIYOC:

From Cusco we will drive for about 1:30 hrs to Racca located in the sacred Valley of the Incas, here we will start the trek; we will hike for 30 minutes until get Ñaupa Iglesia which was an inca shrine place; the guide will explain us about the inca religious and the Andean traditions.

After visiting this place, we will hike uphill until reach the Andean community of Soccma, this community is nested in the heart of the Andes; here we will meet our horses and porters who will accompany us during the whole trek; at Socma the picnic lunch will be served. After the picnic lunch we continue the trek uphill to Perolniyoc, which has an amazing view of the Soccma valley, Maras plateau and Chicon snow - capped mountain; also we will appreciate the waterfall of Perolniyoc (328 feet).(Lunch / Dinner)

Camp altitude: 9,512 ft Hiking length: 7 kms uphill (5 to 6 hour hike)

DAY 02: PIRUCHAYOC - CHANCACHUCO:

After breakfast we start to walk following an Inca water channel; the trail goes up to Ccorimarca valley through ancient terraces locally known as “Andenes”, where the locals still grow crops. We will hike up to our first pass from where we will have an amazing view of the snow - capped mountains of the Urubamba range (Veronica, Chicón, Ausangate, Pachatusan and Salcantay) and the fields of Chincheros, Moray and Maras plateau. After a break and a snack. We continue through the small valley of Chancachuco, where we will have lunch next to the Andean lake of Maracocha, which drains its water into the stream of Chancachuco, through a long Inca water channel of 18 km. At this point we will have the opportunity to admire Andean birdlife, such as the Andean goose, the Cara Cara, the Andean flicker, among others. After a short rest and our picnic lunch we continue downhill to our next campsite, with a spectacular view of the snow peak Huayanay, located in the Vilcabamba range (North). We will also have the opportunity to visit a local family house whose economy is based on potato farming and breeding of sheep.(Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner)

Camp Altitude: 13,776 ft Distance from camp 1 to the pass: 5 kms (4 - hour hike) Distance from the pass to camp 2: 4 kms (2 - hour hike)

DAY 03: CHANCACHUCO - CACHICCATA QUARRY AND COMMUNITY CAMP

Early in the morning, we will head to the second pass over the mountain “Apu Buena Negra”, from where we will have a spectacular birds-eye view of the Sacred Valley of the Incas and the snow peaks of the Urubamba range. From this pass we will hike downhill following the trail until we join the Inca water channel coming from Maracocha Lake. From here we will reach the temple called Intiwatana, located on the edge of the mountain “Apu Alambre”, located in front of the Veronica, where traditional pagos (offerings to mother earth) are made. We also have a great view of the Pakaritampu pyramid. We will then continue downhill to the archaeological site of Choquetacarpo, where we will have lunch. After this, we will walk downhill to visit one of the biggest Inca quarries in Cusco, which supplied stones for the town and fortress of Ollantaytambo.

Tonight we will sleep in a beautiful campsite owned by a group of young local people from the Cachiccata community, hot showers and proper toilets are available. From here we will enjoy a wonderful view of this community as well as of Ollantaytambo and Veronica snow-capped mountain.(Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner)

DAY 04: TRANSFER TO OLLANTAYTAMBO TRAIN STATION – MACHUPICCHU:

After breakfast, we will be transfered to Ollantaytambo train station where we will take the train to Aguas Calientes.

We will visit the Machupicchu Sanctuary. Guided tour.

In the afternoon the train will go back to Cusco from Aguas Calientes train station.
