Chachapoyas: The unknown kingdom of the people from the clouds.

Itinerary Description:



Arrival by plane or flight in Chachapoyas and transfer to hotel Casa Vieja, in the centre of Chachapoyas . option: stay at hotel Casa Andina 3*, 10 kms from the centre.

We drive to the village of Cruz del Pata, where we walk for 20 minutes to Karajia, where we can spot some sarcofagues of the Chachapoyas cultures built on a cliff of the mountain overlooking the deep Utcubamba valley. These sarcofagues are intact and cannot be reached. Afterwards we take lunch in Lamud before visiting Pueblo de los Muertos: statues and funerary mausolea of the most senior leaders of the Chachapoyas culture which date from 1100 to 1350 AD. Here we walk for about 50 minutes.

If you want you can combine Karajia also with Quiocta: the largest cave (550 meters) in Peru with stalagmites and stalagtites of several meters high.

Overnight in Chachapoyas in Hotel Casa Vieja***. Opcion to stay in Casa Andina 3* at the outskirts of Chachapoyas.

Day 2: GOCTA

After breakfast we have a 1h drive to Cocachimbo. Installation in Hotel Gocta Lodge. Hike or hose back drive for 75% of the route (at extra cost) to the waterfall: 3hs one way. Along the way we can see nice vegetation, beautiful flowers and maybe hummingbirds or even the Andean Cock on the Rock which is our Peruvian national bird. Lunchbox with view on the 3th highest waterfall in the world: 771m high Gocta fall. Return to Cocachimbo and free time in the hotel: swimming pool or massage. You can also visit the comunal centre and learn more about local habits.

Dinner and overnight in Gocta Lodge***. Opcion to stay in hotel Casa Andina 3* at the outskirts of Chachapoyas.



After breakfast we drive 3h30 from Gocta or 2h30 from Chachapoyas to the main centre of the Chachapoyas Culture, the “fortress” of Kuelap along a route with great view on the mountains. This cloud people built from the 5th century a huge walled city for their elite with a stunning view on the whole region right on top of a hill coverd with lush vegetation and full of orchids and hummingbirds: Kuelap.

We will have an entensive visit in the ruins and then have lunch in a close by hostal. Lunch(box) with view on the complex. Opcion to do a 1.5 h walk to the bottom of the valley.

Once bace in the valley we drive to the pleasant Estancia Chillo, a family run hacienda far away from civilization and with a dedicated staff. At night a meal is cooked and during free time you can walk in the nice gardens. Overnight in Estancia Chillo (B,L,D).


Transfer to visit the mausolea and the rock paintings of Revash:situated high on the mountain these painted ruines housed the last resting place of important persons of the Chachapoyas society. To reach the houses we need to climb 4.5 kms during 1- 1.5h on a small track or drive on horseback (extra charge).

Afterwards drive to Leymebamba to take a late lunch. In the afternoon visit to the Museum Centro Mallqui which exhibit the archeological foudings of Laguna de Los Cóndores: aside of 200 mummies from Chachapoyas. Inca and Colonial time we also found ceramics, textiles (quipus-cords) and small metal pieces. If there is some time to spare you can visit the nearby hummingbird centre (extra charge) Return to Chachapoyas.

Night bus or overnight in Hotel Casa Vieja***. Option to stay in Casa Andina 3*.


Transfer to the bus terminal or the airport (flights are sometimes offered in high season).

If you are travelling to Cajamarca it is possible to stay on day 4 in Estancia Chillo or a hotel in Leymebamba to take the comfortable day bus to Cajamarca. Driving time from Estancia Chillo 9hs, from Leymebamba 7.5hs, from Chachapoyas 10h. Ask for rates.
