Departure from Huaraz toward the stunning Huayhuash Mountain Range. En route, we stop at Chiquián for a short break before continuing through the upper Pativilca Valley to our first campsite at Cuartelwaín (4,200 m). Lunch en route. After breakfast, we ascend toward Cacanampunta Pass (4,750 m), enjoying breathtaking views of the reddish waters of Pucacocha Lagoon and the eastern peaks of the Huayhuash range. We then descend to Mitucocha Camp, set beneath the spectacular peaks of Jirishanca Chico (5,544 m), Jirishanca Grande (6,094 m), and Rondoy (5,789 m). • Elevation: +680 m / –370 m • Hiking time: 4–4.5 hrs • Distance: 14 km
Today’s trek takes us to Vizcas Pass (4,650 m), where we’ll enjoy panoramic views of Jirishanca’s eastern face. We then descend to the shores of Carhuacocha Lagoon, with an awe-inspiring backdrop of Siulá (6,344 m), Yerupajá (6,634 m), Yerupajá Chico (6,121 m), and Jirishanca (6,094 m). • Elevation: +380 m / –450 m • Hiking time: 4–4.5 hrs • Distance: 11 km
After breakfast, we continue to Huayhuash Camp. This is one of the most challenging yet rewarding days, covering approximately 14 km across steep terrain up to Carnicero Pass (4,800 m). From the viewpoint, we can see the three turquoise lakes of the Siulá Canyon: Qanrajanca, Siulacocha, and Quesillococha. Today we reach the highest point of the circuit: Trapecio Pass (5,000 m). After about three hours of ascent, we can opt to climb to the Santa Rosa Viewpoint (5,200 m) for breathtaking views of Siulá Grande and Sarapo. We then descend toward the lagoons at the base of Puscanturpa, where we stop for lunch before continuing to our camp at Yanapampa (Cuyoc). • Elevation: +750 m / –420 m • Hiking time: 8–9 hrs • Distance: 16 km
We start early (around 4:00 a.m.) with coffee before the steep ascent to San Antonio Viewpoint (4,900 m), one of the most impressive lookouts in Huayhuash. From here, we can admire the Yerupajá Grande (6,635 m) and Siulá Grande. After a photo break, we descend through Huanacpatay Valley, then follow the Calinca Valley to reach Huayllapa Village (3,300 m). After breakfast, we ascend through Huatiac Valley for about four hours, crossing the Tapush Pass (4,750 m). We hike through a small forest of queñua trees (Polylepis incana) before ascending to Yaucha Pass (4,847 m). From here, we enjoy panoramic views of the entire range—and with luck, sightings of condors.
