TRIP DETAILS

  • Level: Moderate
  • Activities: Rafting

Embark on a true expeditionary rafting journey along the Yavero River & Pongo de Mainique, where you’ll become an integral part of the adventure team—helping set up camp, preparing meals, and, if you have rowing experience, even taking the oars to navigate the river yourself. This 9-day trip is designed for those seeking to experience or relive the golden age of river exploration, immersing you in the wild beauty of the Amazon’s upper reaches. The expedition begins in the Sacred Valley of the Incas and traverses the dramatic landscapes of the Andes, descending into the Amazon cloud forest. Over several days, you’ll raft through the pristine waters of the Yavero River, camp on sandy beaches, and explore the strictly protected Megantoni National Sanctuary. Along the way, you’ll encounter abundant wildlife, visit remote Amazonian villages, and enjoy evenings around the campfire. The journey culminates at the legendary Pongo de Mainique—a mystical canyon where the Andes yield to the Amazon basin. The adventure concludes with a return through cacao and coffee farms, with the option to extend your journey to Machu Picchu.

DAY TO DAY SUMMARY

Meeting Point: Cusco City or the Sacred Valley of the Incas

Day 1: Cusco to the Yavero River:

Departure from Cusco toward the town of Calca. We ascend through the Urubamba Range to the Lares Pass, stop for a short rest in Quebrada, then continue climbing to the Yavero Pass (4,400 m / 14,435 ft). From there, we descend into the Amazon cloud forest until reaching 950 m, at the banks of the Yavero River, where we establish our first campsite.

Day 2: Beginning the Rafting Journey:

After preparing the gear and loading the rafts, we receive a comprehensive safety briefing. Then we begin our rafting expedition down the Yavero River, navigating Class III rapids surrounded by lush tropical forest. Camp on a beautiful river beach.

Days 3–6: Through Megantoni Reserve and the Yavero River:

We continue rafting through the crystal-clear, warm waters of the Yavero River for four days. Wildlife sightings include numerous birds, river otters, and monkeys, with opportunities for fishing and jungle walks. Each day we raft 4–5 hours, pass small Amazonian villages, and set up camp on spectacular sandy beaches, enjoying bonfires, happy hours, and delicious meals prepared by our camp chef. On the sixth day, we reach the Urubamba River, camping near the Yoyato tributary, just before the entrance to the Pongo de Mainique, where turquoise waters invite us to relax and swim.

Day 7: The Legendary Pongo de Mainique:

After breakfast, we check in with the SERNANP control post of the Megantoni Reserve and start our descent through the Pongo de Mainique, a lush canyon carved by the Urubamba River where the Andes meet the Amazon. At the end of the passage, we hike to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the Pongo. In the afternoon, our motorized boat picks us up and returns us to Yoyato Beach Camp, where we relax and begin packing for our return.

Day 8: Return to Cusco via Quillabamba:

We board our boat for a 3-hour trip to Puerto Saniriato, where our vehicle awaits. We drive to Echarate for lunch, then continue through the tropical city of Quillabamba to our lodge located on a cacao and coffee farm with organic crops. Approximate driving time: 8 hours.

Day 9: Maranura to Machu Picchu or Cusco:

After breakfast, we visit the Chuncho Cacao Farm before returning to Cusco or the Sacred Valley via Abra Málaga (5–6 hours). Travelers wishing to visit Machu Picchu may continue by road from Maranura–Santa María–Santa Teresa to reach Aguas Calientes and the Inca citadel.
